Hey y'all!

Essence Fest is right around the corner and if you're anything like me, you are frantically trying to figure out what to pack. Don't worry, I got you! Last year was my first year at Essence Fest and I had so much fun! I wish I read an article like this last year because I definitely overpacked and didn't even touch some of the items I brought with me but that also could be attributed to me being a chronic over-packer but I digress! Here are the 5 things I think you need for Essence Fest!

Comfortable Shoes

I am so glad that I packed flats and my trusted converse last year! If I hadn't done that, my feet would have been barking after hour one of Essence Fest. There's a lot of walking involved at the festival, whether it's at the convention center, in the French Quarter, or on Bourbon Street. Even when we hit the parties at night, I always had a pair of flats with me. After the parties, we ended up on Bourbon Street taking in the scene and exploring what was happening. Comfortable shoes are definitely a must!

Breathable Clothes

If you didn't know, New Orleans is very hot and humid, especially in July. Cotton and linen should be the only types of clothing you bring. I can't tell you how many times I was thankful that I packed cotton blends over polyester for the trip. That humidity was nothing like anything I've ever experienced and I grew up in Atlanta.

I got my entire life in my headwraps during the trip. It saved me from having to do my hair many of times and I didn't have to worry about the humidity during the day messing with my curls. The headwrap is also a fashionable statement that helped elevate my outfit to the next level.

Fanny Packs

Fanny packs/bum bags/belt bags, whatever you want to call them, are having a moment right now. This would be ideal to keep essentials with you throughout the day. Also, you don't have to worry about carrying anything in your hand. Last year, I had a cross-body bag because I was carrying my DSLR camera with me and needed the room that a fanny pack didn't afford me. In addition to my camera, I carried extra deodorant (can't be funky), roll-on perfume, handheld fan, wipes, lipstick, and of course, my phone (of course). Either way, having something with you that's hands-free is ideal for NOLA.

This was the best accessory for sure! As I stated, New Orleans is hot and humid the entire time. The sun was always out, which is why you need a cute pair of sunnies. They pull double duty- block the sun from the eyes while also making a cute accessory.

A bonus- Your best friends!

This trip is nothing without your best friends on hand to enjoy the fellowship of all the lovely melaninated beauties that can be seen at Essence Fest. I don't think I would have had as much fun if they weren't there.
